Minister Dekker opens Seniors Cafe JulianaPlaza

On Wednesday June 2, Minister Sander Dekker and Councilwoman Kavita Parbhudayal opened the Seniors Café - a new meeting place for the elderly in the neighborhood. The Residentie Orkest was invited by JulianaPlaza to musically open the Seniors Café.

The Residents, Residentie Orkest The Hague's successful educational project, is ten years old. Many schools now participate in this unique, modern concept of the symphonic orchestra in which not talent development but experience is central and students are intensively coached and enthused for no less than four years.

Nadia (21) was two weeks old when she was taken away from her mother by a social worker. Before she was 18, she had lived at 14 addresses. With her piano piece and spoken word she wants to encourage young people in similar situations and make clear to government and institutions what she thinks should be done differently.

Sylke (19) wants to make a statement about mental health with her scene. She would like people to show genuine interest in each other more often and ask questions. That socially desirable conversations are less frequent. That way serious mental problems might be prevented.

Vera (18) made a spoken word about racism. She finds it bizarre that in 2021 people are still seen as inferior because of their skin color and background. But also that people still make remarks like: I don't see color. That shows little awareness of the problem.

Alicia (21) has been battling eating disorders since she was 13 years old. Something that for years was not taken seriously by her family doctor, because she did not fit into "the picture. With her song "Do You Hear Me?" she wants to make people more aware that there are various eating disorders and that they do not all paint the same picture.

Hacer (17) has lived all her life in Transvaal, a Hague neighborhood with its challenges. She is angered by the amount of dirt on the streets, the sense of insecurity and the lack of respect for each other. With her spoken word, she wants to open the eyes of young people and their parents.

Myrthe (20) gets angry about catcalling, street harassment and the fact that as a woman you should always think about your safety. The title of her song "I'll app you when I'm home" is familiar to every woman, but is far from the mind of many men. Myrthe wants to empower women and wake up men.
