Concert series season 2022-2023

Musical constructions as a source of self-reflection

"Our repertoire is a reflection of how we relate to the world AND each other."

- Sven Arne Tepl - General and artistic director Residentie Orkest

In the 2022/2023 season, the Residentie Orkest 's programming focuses on nature and the inner man. Artistic director Sven Arne Tepl: 'Our repertoire is a reflection of how we relate to the world and each other.'

"I am convinced that precisely in these times, when there is a divide in society, music is even more important than before," said general and artistic director Sven Arne Tepl. In his programming, Sven has deliberately chosen to make connections between man, nature and spirituality. Themes that recur in works Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet and Vaughan Williams' Fifth Symphony. 'These musical constructions encompass a whole life. I think everyone needs reflection and contemplation. How wonderful is it to do this through a beautiful piece of music?'

Bold versus transparent
Another guiding principle in the Residentie Orkest 's programming is the music of Johannes Brahms. In addition to Ein deutsches Requiem and his Violin Concerto, the program includes the Schicksalslied and the Third and Fourth Symphonies. With Brahms you immediately know what kind of meat you're dealing with. He is known as the most classical composer of the romantic period. Our chief conductor Anja Bihlmaier and regular guest conductors Jun Märkl and Richard Egarr each love transparency in their own way. I am very curious about their different interpretations.'

Series and chamber music
In Amare regular series such as Symphonic Friday and the Sunday Matinee will restart in the 2022/2023 season. For chamber music concerts, audiences can visit the Nieuwe Kerk. 'We are blessed with two venues, both with beautiful acoustics. Our entry into Amare has given the orchestra a huge boost. The musicians had to search for a new sound, giving the orchestra a whole new identity, and I mean that in the positive sense!'

Artist in residence
The South Korean pianist Yeol Eum Son has not yet performed often in the Netherlands, but as artist in residence of the Residentie Orkest, Royal Conservatoire The Hague and Amare this is about to change. The prizewinner of the Tchaikovsky Piano Competition can be heard in such works as Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue in addition to piano concertos by Mozart and Ravel. Sven: "I have heard Yeol Eum perform Mozart before and immediately understood why she is widely praised for her crystal clear playing.

Dutch talent
The Residentie Orkest has a long tradition of giving a stage to Dutch musicians and composers. 'We have asked Calliope Tsoupaki to write a new work for us. By Joël Bons we will premiere a cello concerto in The Hague and by Martijn Padding during the Cello Biennale Amsterdam. We will also play a new piano concerto by Rembrandt Frerichs and the Suite from Willem Jeths' controversial opera Ritratto.'

Music from recycled materials
Under the banner of Symphony 2030, a series of concerts and workshops focusing on sustainability, the Dutch premiere of Gregor Mayrhofer's Recycling Concerto for percussion will also take place. 'Everything you see on percussion is made of recycled materials, and materials are also reused elsewhere in the orchestra. The brass, for example, plays with dampers made from used gear. I think it is important that as an orchestra we convey a message, such as awareness of our consumer society and the circular economy. So you see, music is an excellent tool for reflection. I would say: experience it for yourself!

Tipped by Sven "Poulenc's Gloria is not to be missed. To the sounds of this piece you imagine yourself in an enormous cathedral, in a building that will never be finished. We are very happy to have the Groot Omroepkoor as our guest for this program, which will also feature Brahms' Schicksalslied.'
