"I have known the Friends of the orchestra longer than the orchestra itself: my parents have been Friends for years, since well before I myself first played with the orchestra. Very special that so many enthusiastic fans are so involved with the orchestra, a beautiful mutual friendship."

Friends make the difference
Friends support various projects of the Residentie Orkest. We are proud that we can do so much more thanks to our Friends. Read more about the projects Friends are contributing to in the 2023/2024 season here.
Discover the Orchestra is a three-year music program in which Residentie Orkest , in cooperation with KOO, introduces 1,200 pupils from The Hague to professional classical music practice. Students visit the Residentie Orkest and orchestra members visit the school. Together they explore the world of tones, timbre, rhythms and sounds. This results in unforgettable musical experiences, in which children discover that they are part of a large, creative reality that extends far beyond their school and neighborhood.
Friends of the Residentie Orkest with their contribution make possible the conducting project for grade 8 students. The children conduct an ensemble at school and the entire orchestra at Amare. For many students, this is the highlight of the Discover the Orchestra project.
With the One Minute Symphony project, the Residentie Orkest gives composition students the opportunity to write a short work for the orchestra. Prior to the Symphonic Friday concerts, the short composition will be performed by the orchestra. An exciting project for composer, conductor, musicians and for the visitors. With One Minute Symphony XL, two of the best young composers of the season are given the opportunity to create a longer composition for a special occasion during the year. Thanks to a contribution from the Friends, a fair pay is guaranteed for the composers.
The National Master Orchestra Conducting (NMO) is a prestigious two-year master's program offered jointly by the Conservatory of Amsterdam and the Royal Conservatoire The Hague in The Hague. During the course, students take several master classes with the orchestra and the young talents conduct the orchestra (under supervision). Feedback sessions with, for example, the concert masters and other conductors are organized and our chief conductor Anja Bihlmaier has an active role in guiding the students. The Friends thus contribute to a new crop of conductors who can hold their own in (international) professional practice.
Music is our instrument, but not our final goal. We see that not all Hagenaars know how to find Amare , which is why we actively take the orchestra into the neighborhoods. For example, every year we give a free concert in Juliana Plaza in the Transvaal district of The Hague. We can only do this thanks to the support of our Friends.
By having the musicians perform in the neighborhood, we create a connection between local residents and let them enjoy the power of music. We see that the concerts are a success and that the residents of Transvaal also come to Amare more often.
Friends of the Residentie Orkest help make it possible for us to perform concerts in the atmospheric Nieuwe Kerk in The Hague. Musicians from the Residentie Orkest put together their own program for these concerts and tell about their choices during the concert. They take you into musical dreams full of stillness, power and inspiration.
