workshopThe Residentie Orkest The Hague has a long-standing tradition of performing modern compositions. Several world premieres are on the program again this season. But what exactly is modern music? What can you discover in these new pieces of music? Music publicist Thea Derks introduces you to modern classical music in this series of lectures. Afterwards, you can listen to the music discussed directly at Concert Hall .
About the course
The course consists of three lectures of approximately one hour duration. The lectures are held at Amare, prior to a concert of the Residentie Orkest. The lecture will focus specifically on the music played at the concert. We can offer you 1st grade concert tickets at a 20% discount.

The theme of the first lecture is rhythm. The starting point is the beginning of the 20th century, when recognizable rhythmicity increasingly disappears. Specific attention will be paid to "Afrique" by Richard Rijnvos, a work that will have its world premiere this evening.

The third and concluding lecture is on the subject of timbre. Composers in the 20th and 21st centuries experimented extensively with new sounds, for example, Schoenberg's "Sprechgesang" and the "Bartók pizzicato. The piece of music we will learn more about on this evening is another world premiere: in this case, a One Minute Symphony, written for the orchestra by a composition student at the Royal Conservatory of Music.
