Review of Shostakovich 6

With Daniel Raiskin and Antti Siirala

A world premiere for The Hague! Dutch composer Max Knigge wrote a work especially for the Residentie Orkest about the mysterious and fascinating world surrounding the character Eliza May, which was heard for the first time on Friday , Oct. 10. In addition, Antti Siirala took the place grand piano to perform the Norwegian romanticism of Grieg's Piano Concerto . According to Classical Central , Siirala's "touch had something of a harp player's: velvety smooth, with a natural breathing motion. The Residentie Orkest supported this with warm strings and an almost chamber-musical intimacy. What stood out was the intense, committed string sound and the presence of remarkably many young faces in the orchestra - a combination that provided fresh energy and a special dynamic."

Finally, Shostakovich's fascinating Sixth Symphony sounded: whimsical, ironic and biting. "The orchestra gave it their all - not only technically, but emotionally as well. They played with a rare combination of precision and urgency, as if Raiskin was not conducting, but living through this Russian tragedy."

The Residentie Orkest was conducted by Daniel Raiskin. Enjoy some more time with these beautiful photos taken by Wouter Vellekoop at Amare.

"The Residentie Orkest seriously surprised me with this program with its commitment, dynamics and rich sound. This was certainly not the Last time I attended."
