Looking back on Mahler 1

A classic alongside rediscovered repertoire: last weekend, the Residentie Orkest in collaboration with master's students from the Royal Conservatoire The Hague played Mahler's First Symphony alongside works by the forgotten Jewish composer Schulhoff: the playful, jazzy Suite for Chamber Orchestra and the symphony for alto and orchestra 'Menschheit', beautifully performed by mezzo-soprano Barbara Kozelj. All this under the highly inspiring baton of our own chief conductor Jun Märkl.

Enjoy the afterglow with these beautiful photos, taken by Foppe Schut.

Want to enjoy Barbara Kozelj's compelling mezzo-soprano voice in Schulhoff once again? On February 6 and 8, Schulhoff's vocal symphony Landschaften from 1912 will be performed, a recently rediscovered masterpiece in which the composer sets images of nature to music with warm, expressive sounds.
