Notes, Beats & Bars 2026

"I enjoyed being able to share my personal story on stage and seeing that others could relate to it. I've learned that things that seem easy can actually be difficult, and I've learned to have more confidence in myself, regardless of my fear of being around too many people."

- Participant Notes, Beats & Bars

Notes, Beats & Barsis a project for young people ages 12 to 27 from various neighborhoods in The Hague, in which they can discover and develop their musical talents through workshops and performances. In recent years, the project has focused on combining classical music and hip-hop to stimulate creativity and talent development. This season, the program has also expanded to include Latin and Afrobeats.

Young people from the 2Gather Foundation, the ISK department of the Johan de Witt College, and the Residents Academy came together during various workshops and worked toward a spectacular final concert at Theater De Vaillant. Together with musicians from the Residentie Orkest, rappers from the Hague Hip-Hop Center, the Magic Melody Brass Band, and Afrobeats artists BF and Nyarko, each participant brought their own talent to the stage. Some shared their stories through spoken word, others played the djembe, bass guitar, or trumpet, a few were behind the lighting console, and still others performed a rap they had written themselves.

The project brings together young people from diverse backgrounds and fosters inclusion, connection, and collaboration. They are given the space to tell their stories in a way that suits them. In this way, they develop not only musically but also personally, building greater self-confidence and stronger bonds with one another.
