Inner Choices by Franki Dodwell

Photos by Maxime de Bruin

"Not only do I have to make decisions about the music but I also have to make choices based on what I think the characters in the piece would want to do."

- Franki Dodwell

Maxime de Bruin's series of photographs shows the creative process composer Franki Dodwell went through while writing her first operetta. The photographer followed Franki from early in the morning behind the keys in her apartment until late at night.

Maxime drew inspiration from the play UBU ROI, on which Franki's operetta is based. Hidden symbols such as crowns and ghosts and notes from Franki's sheet music were incorporated into the images to emphasize the blurring of worlds and the impact of these decisions on her work.

The series is on view in the lobby of Amare through April 22.

This photo series is part of the concert RO NOW: Inner Choices by the Residentie Orkest, taking place on Friday, April 19 at the Concert Hall of Amare.
