A hero's life
Tchaikovsky & Strauss
This concert is part of the Violin in the Spotlight series.
The stage comes alive with energy today. Violinist Stefan Jackiw, our artist-in-residence for the 2026/2027 season, takes on Tchaikovsky’s exuberant Violin Concerto: a lyrical, demanding and irresistibly expressive work. Following this, chief conductor Jun Märkl continues his journey through German Romanticism this season with Strauss’s monumental Ein Heldenleben (A Hero's Life). Over a hundred musicians bring rich orchestral colours and thrilling climaxes to every bar in an unforgettable experience.
Tchaikovsky’s only violin concerto demands total commitment – dancing melodies, breathtaking technique and emotional immediacy, all in soloist Jackiw's capable hands. Strauss’s Ein Heldenleben (A Hero's Life) is a must-hear: a sweeping musical self-portrait, blending tender serenity with a lush return to calm after the hero's battles with his critics. Strauss openly wove in references to his earlier works, as if the titular hero is reflecting on his musical life. Concertmaster Wouter Vossen’s striking violin solos illuminate the hero from within, creating a truly immersive listening experience bringing together virtuosity, orchestral grandeur and personal storytelling.
