Spectacular sounds
Tchaikovsky & Lutosławski
This concert is part of the Top Pianists series.
Boris Giltburg's return to The Hague is always something to look forward to. A long-standing favourite of the Residentie Orkest, he was our first ever artist-in-residence. Admired for his clarity, depth and finely judged intensity, Giltburg shows why he ranks amongs today's great pianists in Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1: expressive, refined and entirely in service of the music. An evening full of personality and orchestral bravura awaits.
The concert opens with Finlandia, Sibelius’s powerful and charged symphonic poem that rises from silence and grows into a broad, hopeful statement. Lutosławski's Concerto for Orchestra follows: a spectacular masterpiece of contrasts, rhythmic precision and brilliant orchestration – like a series of rooms, each with its own distinct energy and character. After this orchestral exuberance, the music turns inward with The Swan of Tuonela, Sibelius’s subdued vision drawn from Finnish mythology. The gently drifting melody of the English horn over dark, transparent strings creates a timeless, almost otherworldly atmosphere. The evening culminates in Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1. Under the direction of conductor Emilia Hoving – one of today's most exciting young conductors, and a compatriot of Sibelius – the programme comes together in a unique blend of mysticism, virtuosity and pure symphonic power.
In collaboration with master’s students from the Royal Conservatoire The Hague.
