Painting with orchestral colours
Pictures at
an Exhibition
This concert is part of the Symphonic Friday - Large series.
Tonight we celebrate both Beethoven and the power of musical imagination. Violinist Tobias Feldmann returns to the Residentie Orkest to bring Beethoven’s only Violin Concerto to life with nuance, passion and elegance. Chief conductor Jun Märkl leads the orchestra through Mussorgsky's rich sound world. Two works that, each in their own way, explore the boundary between introspection and intensity.
This programme shows how music can tell stories without a single word. Beethoven’s Violin Concerto opens with poetry and finely shaped dramatic arcs: clear, spacious and compelling. Feldmann’s playing highlights both its fragility and its fierceness. Then, Ravel’s colourful orchestration of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition unfolds like a gallery of emotions: grotesque figures, forgotten moments and exuberant sounds, each “exhibition room” transforming the listener's perspective. Märkl draws out the vivid interplay between image and music, building towards a finale that carries you through a range of powerful emotions.
