Cinematic piano music and a lush symphony
Rachmaninoff & Glass
This concert is part of the series Symphonic Friday - Small - €29 for ages 29 and under.
Today, we present a Dutch premiere not to be missed: Philip Glass’s Piano Concerto “M,” a cinematic and mesmerising journey. Pianist Maki Namekawa, Glass’s close musical collaborator, takes centre stage. You’ll also hear Rachmaninoff’s Third Symphony, a passionate blend of nostalgia and contemporary flair. A programme full of contrast, energy and emotional depth.
Under the direction of maestro Dennis Russell Davies – long celebrated for his fiery yet precise conducting, and partner to tonight’s pianist – we explore works where past and present intertwine. Glass’s M, born from his score for the acclaimed film Mishima, radiates contemplation, freedom and inner strength. Rachmaninoff’s Third Symphony, by contrast, embraces memory and longing, with lush strings and playful, jazzy touches. Composed after his emigration to the United States, it balances nostalgia for his homeland with an open, energetic outlook toward the future. A layered listening experience where cinematic clarity and romantic grandeur meet and enhance each other.
