Cellobiennial: Haydn & Brahms
Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ
The Residentie Orkest a staple of the Amsterdam Cello Biennale. It often features Dutch or world premieres, but this time it presents a “super-classical” program of timeless classics. Haydn’s two cello concertos rank among the highlights of the Classical period. The young English cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason, who gained worldwide fame when he performed at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at Windsor Castle, will take on theSecond Cello Concerto.
Ivan Karizna will perform Brahms’sDouble Concerto—also known as “the most beautiful cello concerto”—alongside Liza Ferschtman. Johannes Brahms composed his Double Concerto for violin, cello, and orchestra as a gesture of reconciliation toward his best friend Joseph Joachim, the world-famous violinist with whom he had been estranged for some time.
