Under the baton of Kerem Hasan, the Residentie Orkest brings Residentie Orkest powerfulFifth Symphonyto life. Russian star cellist Anastasia Kobekina performs the solo part in Elgar’s versatile and energeticCello Concerto, one of her favorite solo concertos.

“She plays with double the expressiveness, yet avoids sentimentality,” wroteDe Volkskrantabout Anastasia Kobekina. The Russian cellist has performed at the Concertgebouw on several occasions. This time she will perform the movingCello Concerto byBritish composer Edward Elgar. It is an epic monument full of melancholy, yet also an energetic, uplifting work. “Sparks of hope flare up in the darkness and then sink back into it,” says the soloist about her favorite solo concerto.

Tchaikovsky’sFifth Symphonyis perhaps his greatest symphonic masterpiece. Completed in 1888, the piece begins with a melody that is as dramatic as it is melancholic, which then recurs throughout all movements. In this “symphony of fate,” the composer surrenders to fate and the inscrutable whims of providence. This creates pure musical tension. At the same time, it is a symphony full of yearning melodies, with a masterful final movement in which the threat disappears.
