A chamber music concert
full of colour, lyricism and contrast
Up Close:
Harp in the Spotlight
This concert is part of the series Up Close – €29 for ages 29 and under.
Experience chamber music up close and personal at the Nieuwe Kerk. With the audience seated around the musicians, every note feels warm and immediate, and every nuance comes alive. In this concert, the harp takes centre stage, serving as a unifying force between strings and winds. From Debussy’s refined trio to Ravel’s dazzling ensemble work and Casals’ moving miniature, this is an evening where timbre and intimacy meet.
The four works demonstrate how composers around 1800 and 1900 charted new paths in sound and form. Debussy explores subtle balance and tonal colour in an unusual combination of instruments, while Beethoven's string quartet bursts with sharp contrasts and lively dialogue. Casals transforms a simple folk song with a timeless, meditative glow. Ravel brings it all together in a virtuosic finale, blending elegance, tension and transparency. The programme constantly shifts character, keeping the ear alert and engaged throughout.
