Close to Classics places you at the heart of the orchestra, surrounded by musicians – and, in this edition, two Steinway grand pianos. Conductor Chloe Rooke leads the Residentie Orkest and pianists Tobias Borsboom and Daniel Verhoeven through Saint-Saëns’ inventive The Carnival of the Animals. In addition, young British composer Robin Fiedler brings five brand-new animals to life, written specially for this concert. Hear every nuance, feel the rhythms up close and experience classical music like never before.

Camille Saint-Saëns’ The Carnival of the Animals is a delightful parade of creatures, each brought vividly to life by the orchestra. From graceful lions to playful frogs and plodding tortoises, each movement is a tiny character study – lighthearted on the surface, but clever and full of wit underneath. Beneath the humour lies subtle irony, refined craftsmanship and compassion for both humans and animals. It's music that shows how orchestras tell stories without words.
