Close to Classics places you right in the middle of the orchestra, surrounded by musicians and, for this edition, two grand Steinway pianos. Conductor Chloe Rooke leads the Residentie Orkest pianists Tobias Borsboom and Daniël van der Hoeven through Saint-Saëns’ inventive*Carnival of the Animals*. In addition, the young British composer Robin Fiedler brings five brand-new animals to life, written especially for this concert. Hear the subtlest nuances, feel the rhythms up close, and experience classical music in an unprecedentedly direct way.

Camille Saint-Saëns’*Carnival of the Animals*is a colorful collection of animals, each brought to life by the sound of the orchestra. From the graceful lions to the playful frogs and creeping turtles: each movement is a small character study, playful on the surface but sharp of mind. Behind the humor, the music reveals refined irony, craftsmanship, and a loving gaze upon humans and animals. Music that demonstrates how an orchestra can tell stories without words.
