Simone Lamsma returns to The Hague
Bruch & Schumann
This concert is part of the Violin in the Spotlight series.
The Residentie Orkest debut of the young chief conductor of the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, alongside a Dutch violinist of international renown – this is a concert where everything falls perfectly into place. The German maestro Elias Grandy, praised for his refined and energetic approach, conducts the Residentie Orkest for the very first time. At his side is Simone Lamsma, long one of our favourite soloists and one of the most expressive and precise violinists of her generation.
The afternoon opens with the overture to Genoveva, in which Robert Schumann showcases his unique, harmonically rich language: stormy and dramatic, yet transparent. Next, Lamsma takes centre stage in Max Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1, a work that owes its enduring popularity to its perfect blend of lyricism, warmth and captivating tension. The programme concludes with Schumann’s Symphony No. 2, written during a period of ill health. The music seems to rise from his struggle, moving from dark, tense lines to a finale full of breakthrough and light. The famous chorale melody in the adagio forms the symphony's emotional heart: comforting, tilting towards hope.
