Indestructible masterpiece
Berlioz' Symphonie fantastique
This concert is part of the "Top Pianists" series.
We kick off the festive month of December with two iconic masterpieces. The internationally acclaimed Yeol Eum Son returns to the Residentie Orkest Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2—a work that oscillates between ecstasy and melancholy, in which her phenomenal technique and poetic touch truly shine. The composition demands physical daring and deep expression, and that is precisely where she excels. Under the baton of chief conductor Jun Märkl, a concert emerges that touches the heart immediately and demonstrates what true top musicians can achieve.
Here, two works each reveal their own form of imagination. Rachmaninoff draws you in with sweeping melodic lines and that recognizable, heavy, bell-like opening; Berlioz breaks boundaries with his cinematic Symphonie fantastique, a daring experiment that permanently changed romantic music. Together, Son and Märkl demonstrate how piano tones and orchestral explosions complement each other, creating an intense and rich musical whole.
