Celebrating 200 years of Beethoven
Beethoven's Symphony No. 5
This concert is part of The Fab Five series.
2027 marks two hundred years since Beethoven's death, a milestone that calls for a grand tribute. This concert presents Beethoven's music in three distinct works, each revealing a different side of his incredible creative energy: playful, sparkling and monumental. Beethoven specialist Richard Egarr leads the orchestra with passion and boldness, while pianist Dejan Lazic shines in the vibrant Piano Concerto No. 2. A celebration of one of the greatest composers of all time.
Beethoven’s indomitable imagination takes centre stage tonight. The theatrical overture Die Geschöpfe des Prometheus (The Creatures of Prometheus) sets the tone with dancing rhythms and surprising lightness. A young composer responds with a specially composed One Minute Symphony XL, a contemporary nod to Beethoven’s daring and bravura. The highlight of the programme is Beethoven's Symphony No. 5, a masterpiece that moves from struggle to triumph. Egarr shapes the work as a musical argument – alert, charged and full of electric tension. In this anniversary year, it promises to be a memorable experience.
