Musical landscapes
Smetana & Schulhoff

This concert is part of the Symphonic Friday - Large series.
Composers capture landscapes not with paints and brushes, but with instruments and notes. Today, you'll hear three of them bring to life the landscapes, traditions and myths of their homelands. Smetana's famous Má vlast (My Fatherland) is a tribute to his native Czech Republic. The colourful sounds of Vltava (The Moldau) are the most iconic, but the other symphonic poems likewise offer striking glimpses of the Bohemian landscape.
Our chief conductor Jun Märkl will bring these sweeping vistas and traditions to life. We'll kick off the evening with Erwin Schulhoff's scintillating arrangement of Beethoven's famous Rage Over a Lost Penny, a work brimming with energy, virtuosity and playful rhythms. Next up is Schulhoff's 1912 vocal symphony Landschaften, a recently rediscovered masterpiece painting vivid images of nature through warm, expressive sounds. Mezzo-soprano Kozelj's captivating voice will take this musical journey to the next level. An evening full of virtuosity and refinement, perfect for anyone already yearning for spring in the midst of winter.
