Celebrated string players
Shostakovich
& Brahms

This concert is part of the Close Up – Complete series.
Tonight, the Nieuwe Kerk will be filled with grand sounds - yet still maintain an intimate atmosphere. The audience will be seated around the ensemble, making the experience even more special. Enjoy some of the finest chamber music, performed by a select group of string players from our own orchestra. They'll perform two compositions by two famous composers: Brahms and Shostakovich.
Dmitri Shostakovich's String Quartet No. 7 is short but powerful, dedicated to his late first wife, Nina. It balances tenderness with emotional intensity, and dance-like elements with an underlying tension. Next, we'll hear Johannes Brahms's famous String Sextet No. 1 , a favourite among string ensembles - lyrical, romantic, dark and warm, with brilliant cello lines.
New for the 2025/26 season, this concert will be performed in a 360° setup.
