Close Up:
Schubert's Octet
Close Up is chamber music at its best: an intimate concert where you, as a visitor, sit in a 360° arrangement around the musicians and can experience the music up close.
Franz Schubert's Octet is full of lyricism, color, and playful energy. Schubert composed this work in 1824 at the request of a Viennese nobleman who played the clarinet himself—the result was a unique combination of strings and wind instruments. In the special setting surrounding the ensemble, this work sounds festive and refined, but also intimate and introspective.
Although he was originally inspired by Beethoven's Septet, Schubert went further: he created a six-part work that is both charming and symphonic. The composer's melodic genius is clearly audible, with refined dialogues between violin, clarinet, horn, and bassoon, supported by the rich depth of viola, cello, and double bass. His unique instrumentation gives each instrument its own voice, while at the same time forming a harmonious whole. The melodies are lilting and almost vocal in nature, echoing his songwriting skills.
