This concert is part of the Symphonic Friday - Large series.
Tonight's programme brings together three masterpieces, each with its own unique style. The first is solemn and intense, the next playful and elegant, and the last dramatic and virtuosic. The contrast between Mayer's mournful Overture , Schubert's charmingly youthful Symphony No. 3 and Brahms's emotionally profound Violin Concerto makes for a dynamic and compelling evening. Each piece plays with shifts in dynamics and moods, and each is both intimate and powerful.
These three masterpieces, spanning the full range of classical expression, will take centre stage tonight under the direction of our regular guest conductor Richard Egarr. Mayer's solemn Overture steadily builds tension, full of atmosphere, interaction and strong rhythms. Schubert's Symphony No. 3, composed when he was just eighteen, brims with youthful energy and charm, playfully dancing between light and dark. Then comes Brahms's Violin Concerto, a technically demanding and emotionally profound work written for his friend, violinist Joseph Joachim. Our artist in residence, Bomsori Kim - internationally acclaimed for her virtuosity and heartfelt playing - will bring this monumental work to life.
