Mozart's Piano Quintet, composed in 1784 at the start of his most creative period, is one of his most remarkable works. He famously called it "the best work I have ever composed" - at least, up until then. Written for piano, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon, it combines lush melodies with brilliant instrumentation. Each instrument gets a chance to shine, while the piano part ties everything together in a warm, harmonious texture. Next up is the Nonet by Louis Spohr, a lesser-known but no less fascinating composer.
