Mendelssohn, Vaughan Williams & Handel
A British Evening

This concert is part of the Symphonic Friday - Large series.
Join the Residentie Orkest for an evening with a rich and compelling programme celebrating Britain-inspired music. Our regular guest conductor Richard Egarr will kick off the concert with Mendelssohn's The Hebrides, a vivid and evocative orchestral ode to the wild beauty of Scotland. Inspired by Mendelssohn's visit to the island of Staffa, it paints a musical picture of the waves crashing against the cliffs and the ruggedness of the landscape.
Next up is Vaughan Williams's intimate Suite for Viola and Orchestra, performed by Timothy Ridout, whose warm, expressive playing reveals the heart and soul of this work. After the intermission, Egarr will lead the orchestra through two masterpieces by Handel, who became a naturalised British citizen - a fine addition to this programme. His dance-like Water Music evokes the atmosphere of a lively boat trip on the Thames, while the explosive sounds of The Royal Fireworks promise a spectacular finale. An evening full of nature, poetry and royal grandeur, performed by masterful musicians.
