Mendelssohn's finest
An American Dream

This concert is part of the Sunday Matinee series.
Experience musical freedom and let yourself be amazed by this unique performance of Florence Price's Third Symphony. Her rich orchestration captures both the universal power of music and a deeply personal experience. As an African-American woman composer in the 1930s American South, Price's identity profoundly shaped her work. After decades of being overlooked by the classical music establishment, she now continues to move and inspire audiences today.
Price composed her Third Symphony after escaping the stifling South during the Harlem Renaissance in Chicago. The piece reflects a unique blend of European symphonic traditions and African-American influences: spirituals, blues, rhythm. It's the perfect match for one of our favourite conductors, the American Andrew Grams. The proud, powerful sounds of Price's symphony will be paired with a melodic masterpiece: Mendelssohn's world-famous Violin Concerto, performed by the extraordinary Karen Gomyo. We'll kick the afternoon off with Gershwin's lively An American in Paris, where jazz and classical music meet in a vibrant tribute to the City of Light.
