Slavic classical music is alive with emotion, romance and lively folk influences. This afternoon, you will hear works by three Eastern masters, including the overture to an opera by the celebrated Czech composer Bedřich Smetana. The Bartered Bride will transport you to a village fair, where the couple Markenka and Jenik try to outwit a marriage broker. Here's hoping for a happy ending...

This afternoon will see the acclaimed young opera conductor Leonardo Sini return to The Hague, where he gave his graduation concert with the Residentie Orkest in 2017. Following the opera overture, you'll be treated to Josef Suk's warm and colourful Fantasy for Violin and Orchestra. This isn't a traditional violin concerto, but a free-spirited and imaginative work inspired by traditional Slavic folk melodies. Taking on the virtuosic violin part is the celebrated Dutch violinist Liza Ferschtman. Her energetic and versatile style is perfect for this piece. We'll end the afternoon with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's expressive Symphony No. 4, a symphonic poem expressing his inner struggle and longing for happiness.
