RO NOW
Bruch & Mendelssohn
This concert is part of the RO NOW series.
RO NOW adds lustre to your weekend! Treat yourself to musical masterpieces that are guaranteed to delight your ears. The conductor will first briefly introduce the music, illustrated with examples by the orchestra, to enhance your experience. The wild beauty of the Scottish landscape left such an indelible impression on Bruch and Mendelssohn that they had to capture it in music. Can you hear the clarinet and oboe imitating the bagpipes?
Max Bruch's Scottish Fantasy opens with the melancholy sound of the violin, evoking a keen sense of longing for the vast sky and the damp grass. Violin virtuoso Paul Huang will lead us across the Highlands with rich, increasingly expressive melodies. He's a close musical friend of our returning guest conductor and incoming principal conductor, Jun Märkl. Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 3 similarly pays homage to Scotland's rugged landscape. Can you hear the warriors' weapons clash, see the mud kicked up by their horses' hooves? Here and there, you'll be able to catch a glimpse of folk melodies, with their lively rhythms and heartfelt lyricism.
