In our Last concert of this season at Amare , our incoming principal conductor, Jun Märkl, closes spectacularly. He and the Residentie Orkest will perform Mahler's heavenly Fourth Symphony. This piece of music explores innocence, the supernatural and the idyllic, with a particular emphasis on the everyday and the playful. The finale, sung by soprano Elizabeth Watts evokes a serene image of the afterlife. One of the most beloved symphonies in music history explores Mahler's fascination with childlike perception. We open with Bartók and top cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras, in the Last concert in his role as artist in residence.

In addition, during the season's farewell, our wonderful artist in residence Jean-Guihen Queyras takes the stage to perform a personally much-loved piece; Béla Bartók's Alt violin Concerto for cello, reworked by himself. This innovative and versatile composer is still known for his enormous originality - rich combinations of folk music, a unique classical style, dissonance, unconventional harmonies and passion for technique. It was one of the Last pieces the composer created. We previously played this version by and with Queyras in 2022. Daily newspaper Trouw wrote about it, "Virtuoso and biting sounds performed with great élan."

"Every collaboration with Jean-Guihen Queyras is a celebration. In the process, he has fantastic ideas. Who else would dare to adapt Bartók's Viola Concerto for cello?"

- Sven Arne Tepl, general and artistic director Residentie Orkest
