Dutilleux's 1970 Cello Concerto Tout un monde lointain... is considered a modern classic. Countless cellists have latched onto the deeply expressive sounds of the French composer. It is picturesque music in which the cellist can put his or her heart and soul. Cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras does not shy away from ingenious scores and lifts Dutilleux' Cello Concerto to new heights.
Toutun monde lointain is a virtuoso trial by fire for any right-minded cellist. An impressive string of top cellists have already ventured into the masterpiece. From Mstislav Rostropovich, for whom Dutilleux composed it, to Nicolas Altstaedt. Dutilleux based his cello concerto on the poetry of Charles Baudelaire. An intensely musical meditation on the inner journey that everyone travels.
The romantic music of Robert Schumann is also full of fiercely flaming souls. The Residentie Orkest and principal conductor Anja Bihlmaier consider Schumann's Fourth Symphony in which the composer paints a portrait of the human psyche in all its darkness and drama.
