Intense romance
Mahler & Franck
Unfortunately, this concert has already taken place. But not to worry! We will be playing many more concerts soon.
Do you hear that little melodic motif? Listen how it develops into the major theme of César Franck's Symphony in d. French Romanticism expressed in one of the most beloved symphonies, brought to you by the Residentie Orkest led by guest conductor Andrew Grams. Mahler's Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen is full of heartbreak, sensitively sung by award-winning baritone Manuel Walser. Vulnerability also resonates in The Louder the Birds Sing by Angela Elizabeth Slater. She wrote it during the coronal shockdown and thus won the Gaudeamus Composition Award.
Mahler thought life was tough. Even a high-spirited song ends sadly in his Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen. A masterpiece about a rejected young man, consumed by grief, anger and loneliness. Baritone Manuel Walser is one of the Vienna State Opera's standout voices. After Mahler's sadness, he lets you dream away with Wagner's O du, mein holder Abendstern from Tannhäuser. In the award-winning The Louder the Birds Sing, the young Slater voices what the lockdown has done to us. Returning guest conductor and audience favorite Andrew Grams concludes with the grand orchestration of César Franck's only symphony, a work full of beautiful melodies and harmonies.
