Frequently Asked Questions
First of all, you will receive a confirmation of receipt so you can be sure that we received your cover letter and resume correctly. Once the vacancy is closed, we email or call all candidates with whom we would like to schedule an interview. In case of rejection, we will always send a message.
If you want to apply for an orchestral position, we ask you to fill out the application form associated with the vacancy. This can be found on our website. Most of the selection process consists of a trial play, in which you play both orchestral parts and solo pieces. A standard trial game has three rounds: preliminary round, main round and final round. The mock play committee evaluates the candidates. With enough votes, you may advance to the next round. The winner(s) of the mock play are nominated by the committee to the artistic director.
This is followed by a job interview. If this is positive, you will receive a temporary appointment for one year After the first three months in the orchestra, you will receive feedback on your performance. At the latest in the tenth month of your annual contract, the appointment committee will make a final evaluation. If this is positive, we will normally offer you a permanent appointment.
The annual classification of the Residentie Orkest runs from August 1 to July 31. In May, each orchestra member receives the schedule for the following season. This tells you which productions you will be playing in and which weeks you are free.
A production usually lasts a week, starting with one or two rehearsals on Tuesday. We rehearse at Concert Hall or in Studio Amare. Soloists often join rehearsals later in the week. Sometimes the orchestra plays a lunch concert on Friday, followed by one or more concerts over the weekend.
Yes, before the year allocation is completed, you can pass on your preferences for the productions you want to play in (or not). There are, of course, some conditions attached to this. For recordings, for productions that require a large cast or for which the orchestra works with the principal conductor, it is usually more difficult to get time off. Changes in the annual schedule are usually negotiable. As an orchestra member, you can occasionally request a week's (unpaid) leave.
We expect our musicians to also be employable for our business, educational and social activities and stage presentations in a smaller lineup. This ranges from jam sessions with the rappers to playing in a small ensemble during a Business Circle event at a special location.
Yes, the Residentie Orkest has voice rooms at Amare that can be reserved for self-study. Before the start of a general rehearsal, the rooms are free to our musicians.
Our orchestra members play on their own instruments, with the exception of major instruments such as the harp, percussion and double basses. If you do not have a quality instrument, we will help you search and select.
In the orchestra we have three types of functions: Principal, Associate Principal and tutti. Scales for these positions can be found in the Collective Bargaining Agreement for Orchestras.
The orchestra collectively has four weeks of summer vacation, at least three of which fall within the school vacation period. More information on vacation days can be found in the collective bargaining agreement.
Yes, we have an extensive training budget. This allows our orchestra members to further develop their knowledge and skills. The training budget can also be used for career-oriented training, which you can use for possible future positions outside our organisation. Depending on the relevance to your current position, we make arrangements that we record in a study agreement.
There are limited advancement opportunities for orchestra members. If you wish to advance to a (Associate) leader position as a tutti, we ask that you re-try playing.
Yes, a VOG is required for every position at the start.
