The Residentie Orkest has several immediate vacancies for:
Principal Double bass (75% with obligation 2nd chair)
Associate Principal Double bass (75%)
TuttiDouble bass (50%)


 

The positions 
As a musician in our orchestra, in addition to your excellent artistic and technical level, you will maintain an open and hospitable attitude. We rehearse and perform new programmes each week. Moreover, you will be available for (educational and outreach) activities and performances in smaller settings. We ask our Principal and Co-Principal to lead the section and perform duties in their respective roles in an inspiring way, actively taking part in (Principal) meetings, exchanging ideas with the orchestra management, taking care of an up to date substitute register, and taking part in (audition) panels.   

Job requirements  

Needless to say, you must be a distinguished double bass player, and possess excellent skills as both an orchestral player as well as an ensemble player. We expect you to be well prepared at all times, and your professional etiquette is of the highest standard.
  

For us it is essential that every colleague acts as an ambassador for our orchestra, and in addition to collective stage activities, cooperate in outreach and educational activities and productions in ensemble settings. We are searching for a positive and engaged team player who can strike the right balance between individuality and the collective.   

Application and procedure 

We would like to receive your application in the form of a fully completed application form by July 3, 2023. A reference to a representative video is a plus, especially for candidates we do not yet know.  

The auditions for these positions will be held on Tuesday 5 September (preliminary and first rounds) and Wednesday 6 September (final round) 2023. Compulsory works: 
 

  • Choice of classical concerto:
    - Karl Ditters von Dittersdorf, Contrabass concerto E major, 1st movement with cadenza and 2nd movement,
    - Johann Baptist Vanhal, Concert for Contrabass D major, 1st movement with cadenza and 2nd movement; 

  • Choice of romantic concerto:
    - S. Koussevitzky, Concert for Double Bass F-sharp minor, 1st and 2nd movements
    - G. Bottesini, Concert for Double Bass No. 2 b minor, 1st movement with cadenza and 2nd movement 

  • Sarabande from J.S.Bach's 1st cello suite (only if played for the job of Principal and/or Co-Principal) 

  • Orchestral parts to be determined, one of which will be played together with the Principal in the finals 

The trial game should be played in orchestral tuning (A442). German or French bows are both allowed.

Other information 

To be eligible for these positions, you must hold valid and unrestricted work and residence permits for the Netherlands if you are from a country outside the EU, your application will not be considered if you do not hold these documents. We will ask for a Certificate of Conduct [Verklaring Omtrent Gedrag (VOG)] at the time of making the appointment.
