Composition assignment young talent

With the One Minute Symphony project, the Residentie Orkest gives composition students the opportunity to write a short work for orchestra. A number of students have made such an impression with their compositions that they have been commissioned by the orchestra.

One such example is Pema Bennardis. Her work "Sol," inspired by The Hague's Central Station, was praised by none other than regular guest conductor Jun Märkl. At his request, Pema wrote "Anemoi," which was performed on Oct. 15, 2021. This work focuses on the theme of change.

Pema on Anemoi: "The fact that everything is always constantly changing. The beauty of change, accepting it and embracing it. I wanted to connect this to something tangible. Anemoi are the four Greek gods of the wind, each carries its own personality connected to the season in which they blow. Each has its own character and each with its own atmosphere. The different characters carried by these winds brought the idea of change to sound. For nothing is as changeable as the wind."
