Dvořák was crazy about trains and knew locomotives and train numbers almost by heart. In his Fifth Symphony, you can hear echoes of that movement: rustic music that gradually picks up steam. Mahler narrowly escaped death in 1901. A few months later, he wrote a large portion of his intimate Rückert Lieder.
