Winter Dreams
Winter Dreams is a follow-up to the successful Sheherazade project in 2023. This year it was linked to Tchaikovsky's Winter Dreams symphony, and with music, stories and eating together, it sought to connect with area residents from different cultural backgrounds.
"Now the winters in Ukraine seem colder and the nights longer. This time is full of concern for loved ones at war and fleeing in other countries. [....] Especially now is a time of hope and new dreams. Dreams that winter will bring joy and peace. And Peace!"
- Luida, Ukrainian storyteller taking Dutch classes at Taal aan Zee
The Residentie Orkest aims to introduce all residents of The Hague to music, to inspire them and to connect them with each other. With the Symphony 2030 project 'Winterdromen' (Winter Dreams) the orchestra went into various districts of The Hague to ask local residents to tell their stories and memories of winter between the music.
A string quartet of the Residentie Orkest played music by Tchaikovksi, Dvořák and Vivaldi combined with traditionals from the Caucasus and Ukraine. Between the music, winter stories were read by narrators from different cultural backgrounds from different neighborhoods. These narrators were nominated by our social partners, such as a Ukrainian student from Taal aan Zee, a Turkish volunteer from the Vadercentrum Adam (also a language buddy at Taal aan Zee) and a Hindustani volunteer from STEK Den Haag, Buurt en Kerk Shalom. The narrators were coached by our partner Haags Verhaal.
For this project we worked together with several partners: Haags Verhaal, Vadercentrum Adam, Participatiekeuken Moerwijk, Stichting Lichtpuntjes van Mariahoeve, Bibliotheek Den Haag, Taal aan Zee.
