RO & KC LAB
Talent development at the Residentie Orkest
"Students learn a tremendous amount when they actually have to conduct and communicate with the musicians and composers and that's a huge win for everyone."
- Jac van Steen - conductor and teacher
The Residentie Orkest believes in fostering talent: today's students are tomorrow's professional musicians. We contribute to talent development at various levels: from fostering as yet untapped talent in elementary school children to inviting and guiding young musicians, conductors and composers at the beginning of their (international) careers. The intensive cooperation with our upstairs neighbor, the Royal Conservatory of Music, is the basis of our talent development programs. One of our projects is the RO x KC Lab, which general and artistic director Sven Arne Tepl tells us more about.
RO x KC Lab
"This is a project that originated during the corona period during the lockdown. The RO x KC Lab is a testing ground in which the projects and training described above are combined. We have an ensemble from the orchestra, four student composers, the NMO student conductors and the Art of Sound student tone masters. Their teachers are all there as well. The composers have to write a four-minute piece in a short time, and this is rehearsed on the spot; the composers get feedback from the ensemble, the conductors are accompanied by Jac van Steen, for example, and the tone masters make recordings under the direction of Daan van Aalst. So much energy comes together here, it's incredibly intense! It only takes one day, but everyone who participates experiences its great added value."
With thanks to the conservatories of The Hague and Amsterdam and the Kersjes Fund.
"It is an incredibly important task for the Residentie Orkest to make a substantial contribution to a new generation of composers and conductors."
- Concertmaster Wouter Vossen
