CD reissue: Mahler 2 by Hans Vonk

Hans Vonk (1942-2004) was one of the most prominent Dutch conductors of the twentieth century and between 1980 and 1991 chief conductor of the Residentie Orkest. Brilliant Classics brings a CD reissue of Mahler's monumental Auferstehungs Symphony performed by the Residentie Orkest under the baton of Hans Vonk: an absolute must-have!

The Residentie Orkest has a long tradition of Mahler's symphonies. Most recently, Mahler's Auferstehungs symphony was performed by our chief conductor Anja Bihlmaier. This same symphony was recorded in the 1980s by the Residentie Orkest under then chief conductor Hans Vonk with the participation of Maria OrĂ¡n (soprano), Jard van Nes (alto) and the Dutch Theater Choir. An impressive and moving recording that deserved to be reissued.
Gustav Mahler's Second Symphony"Auferstehung" was composed between 1888 and 1894 and marked a major advance in Mahler's artistic development. The symphony is extensive, covering five movements and dealing with themes of life, death and the afterlife. The Second Symphony is known for its emotional depth and grandeur. The opening movement sets a somber tone, with brooding melodies reflecting on human mortality. Subsequent movements explore contrasting emotions, from moments of sublime beauty to passages of intense anguish. The symphony reaches its climax in the Last movement, where Mahler introduces vocal soloists and a choir. This dramatic finale contemplates the concept of resurrection and ultimate redemption, culminating in a triumphant and awe-inspiring finale.
