Young composer writes new work for Prinsjesdag
At the request of the States General, Irish composer Franki Dodwell (31) has written a composition especially for the United Assembly at Prinsjesdag. Parade will be performed by the brass quintet of the Residentie Orkest during the King's departure after the speech from the throne. In Dodwell's words, it is an upbeat piece in which she wants to express the opportunities and optimism that a new political year holds.

Franki Dodwell studied Jazz at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire before beginning her studies in Composition at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. She was also the winner of the Buma New Music Incentive in 2022. What immediately stands out is her cheerfulness and openness. While talking about the creation of her piece, she talks about how grateful she is for this opportunity. She also sees composing the Prince's Day piece as a chance to thank the Netherlands for the opportunities she has had here and the great time she has had here.
As the title Paradetje hints, Dodwell enjoys using humor in work. "Humor is a great way to connect with people who are not normally into classical music," Dodwell says. "Humor allows me to create greatest, funny, absurdist, but accessible music."
This is the fourth time especially for Prinsjesdag that a young composer has been given the opportunity to compose a piece of music. In addition toParadetje, the United Assembly traditionally performs Jurriaan Andriessen's Il discorso della coronaand Johan de Meij'sHymn of the States Generalat Prinsjesdag . This Last piece was specially composed in 2015 for the celebration of 200 years of the States General.
