Chief conductor Jun Märkl ushers in new musical chapter

'I've never seen an orchestra so deeply rooted in the community'

When conductor Jun Märkl isn't exploring the Alaskan wilderness in his camper van, you'll find him on the staff of the world's best-known orchestras. This summer he joins as chief conductor of the Residentie Orkest, of which he has been a regular guest conductor since 2021. In fact, his relationship with the orchestra dates back to 2011. "A new conductor usually comes in as a breath of fresh air, but we already have a solid foundation together.
Bridge between experience and innovation

The Residentie Orkest went through many changes in recent years. The move to Amare has given it a new home with excellent acoustics, where it can find its voice and look ahead with confidence. "Now that the orchestra is settled, you can feel the optimism. It is a wonderful starting point for Jun to define and further refine the orchestra's sound.

At the same time, a generational shift is underway. Seasoned musicians are retiring and incoming talent is bringing fresh perspectives and new energy. Jun embraces this transition: "My job as chief conductor is to let the new generation grow, without losing the orchestra's identity. This is an opportunity, but also a challenge. By building a bridge between experience and innovation, I want to build on the legacy of the musicians who worked here all these years.'

Inviting and Encouraging'

Jun's approach is characterized by cooperation rather than control. 'Previous generations of conductors were often authoritarian, but that no longer works. Today's musicians are highly educated and bring their own artistic insights.' His leadership style is based on motivation, trust and connection. 'I strive for a work environment where musicians can bring out the best in themselves. I invite and encourage them instead of telling them what to do.' Open communication and mutual respect thus help the orchestra perform at the highest level and shape its own signature.

'Happy musicians play better'

Jun's philosophy is simple: "Happy musicians play better. When musicians feel engaged and motivated, their music naturally improves. He is convinced that his responsibility as a conductor goes beyond the notes on the page: 'Music is about emotion. To fully express it, you have to open up - and with openness comes vulnerability.' A conductor must therefore create a supportive environment in which musicians feel confident to take risks and express themselves fully. 'They need to know that I will support them, not work against them.'

International exposure

From this vision, Jun hopes to strengthen the musical identity of the Residentie Orkest . In addition, he wants to give the orchestra more exposure internationally. 'I have always admired Dutch art and culture. The quality of the orchestras here is exceptional. We have been working for three years with Naxos, the world's largest distributor of classical music. By sharing our performances worldwide, we showcase what the Residentie Orkest has to offer.' Jun believes this will strengthen not only the orchestra's reputation, but also the musicians' confidence in their own abilities.

"Combining a high artistic level with an educational and social role may seem like a contradiction, but it is not at all. That is what makes this orchestra so special."

- Jun Märkl

Rooted in the community

The Residentie Orkest plays an important social role in the Hague region. Jun has deep respect for this broader mission: "I have never seen an orchestra so deeply rooted in the community. In addition to symphonic programming, the orchestra organizes coffee concerts, performances with conservatory students and interactive projects for children. Jun sees these initiatives as a perfect balance between artistic quality and social engagement. "Combining a high artistic level with an educational and social role may seem like a contradiction, but it is not at all. That's what makes this orchestra so special.'
