Gerard Spronk on Beethoven's Pastoral

Music as a place to catch your breath

For violinist Gerard Spronk, Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony, the “Pastoral,” is more than just a well-known masterpiece. It is music that invites you to pause for a moment. Inspired by nature and the outdoors, Beethoven composed a symphony that does not so much tell a story as evoke a feeling: peace, space, and reflection.

For Spronk, the power of this work lies in that immediate experience. “Something happens from the very first notes,” he says. “The Concert Hall seems Concert Hall away, and you step into another world.” In that world, there is room to breathe, to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life, and to reconnect with yourself.

On April 24, 2026, the Residentie Orkest will perform Anna Clyne’s cello Residentie Orkest *Dance* and Beethoven’s *Pastoral*. Contemporary alongside classical, yet both offer a fascinating interplay of lyricism and energy.
