Activities around Sheherazade

Music, fairy tales and meal

On December 15 and 17, the Residentie Orkest in Amare will play Rimsky-Korsakov's Sheherazade, which retells fairy tales from a thousand and one nights. Leading up to this concert, you can experience fairy tales from Ukraine, Iran and Somalia on Dec. 9, 13 and 14 by storytellers from different districts of The Hague. A string quartet from the orchestra will accompany the storytellers with the enchanting music of Rimsky-Korsakov's Sheherazade.

The three storytellers from The Hague neighborhoods are Ukrainian Oksana Smirnova, Somali Mandeeq Warsame and Iranian Majid Namdar - they are accompanied in this by Het Haags Verhaal. The musicians of the Residentie Orkest are violinists Pieter van Loenen and Gerard Spronk, viola player Judith Wijzenbeek and cellist Gideon den Herder.

For this project we are working with several partners: Haags Verhaal, Taal aan Zee, Taal in de Bieb and Bibliotheek Den Haag, Buurt en Kerkhuis Shalom and the Vadercentrum Adam.

The goal of this project is to connect different neighborhood residents and people from diverse backgrounds, through music and fairy tales from different (and sometimes their own) cultures. The project is part of Symphony 2030, the social pillar of the Residentie Orkest and stems from the ambition to be relevant and meaningful full for all residents of the city, from all walks of life.
