The power of the One Minute Symphony
Composers rarely get the chance to actually perform a work for symphony orchestra. The One Minute Symphony offers about six to eight composition students of the Royal Conservatory in The Hague per concert season the opportunity to profile themselves with a short symphonic work. The concept of the One Minute Symphony is simple: have a composition student write a symphonic work of one minute, which is then performed by the Residentie Orkest during a concert. Young composers such as Thomas van Dun, Karmit Fadael, Jan-Peter de Graaff and others have once written a One Minute Symphony and are now receiving major commissions from other orchestras. "What I really like about the One Minute Symphony project," Karmit Fadael relates, "is that it has really opened doors with me into the orchestral world."
Since 2017, when the first One Minute Symphony was on the desks, some eighty have now been composed and played. Of course, that deserves a brief review!
