What do I like to listen to?
Two pictures or Two images by Bela Bartók (opus 10). I love this piece and think it is far too little programmed. It encompasses an enormous range of color and emotion and all in a relatively short work. I highly recommend it, as do the four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes by Benjamin Britten. Ever since I played this opera with the Britten-Pears Orchestra at the Aldeburgh Festival, I have been fascinated by the Sea Interludes. The music transports you into a storm that feels so realistic it is frightening. Finally, Richard Strauss' Metamorphoses, a fantastic piece. The harmony is so incredibly dense and complicated, but the melodies are so simple in their beauty. It is truly one of my favorite pieces to play and to listen to.
