A dream is coming true for Tijl Beckand. For the AVROTROS program "Tijl and Beethoven's Ninth," he stands in front of Residentie Orkest in the world-famous Ninth Symphony.
On May 7, 1824, a colossal work was premiered in Vienna: Ludwig van Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. A work that radically changed the course of music history, a work that anyone anywhere in the world can sing along to, a work that connects, a work that continues to intrigue, inspire and is an inexhaustible source of hope for fraternization. Some two hundred years later, a fourteen-year-old Tijl Beckand heard a piece in a trailer for a famous Hollywood movie. From that moment on, the Ninth has remained in his DNA. 2020 was the Beethoven Year, the year in which his 250th birthday unfortunately could not be celebrated in a big way.
The year in which Tijl had to postpone his lifelong dream for a year, but will still come true in 2021; conducting the Ninth! Without any music training, that's like trying to swim the canal without arms and legs. And yet he's going to try it with the Residentie Orkest! An almost impossible task, preceded by years of study because Tijl cannot read a note. It will be unique! And you can be there. Beethoven's Ninth by Tijl Beckand, an ultimate celebration of the extended Beethoven year.

"The Residentie Orkest and Tijl Beckand have a long friendship. When he told us about his love and fascination for Beethoven's Ninth and about his recording project for AVROTROS, it was clear that we wanted to offer him, as his The Hague orchestra, the chance to stand in front of the orchestra and feel the magic of a great collective of professionals. Not suggest that you are just a conductor, just do it, no, but accompany him as a friend up Mount Everest. A special project completely unlike anything else."
- Sven Arne Tepl, general and artistic director Residentie Orkest
