Unfortunately, this concert has already taken place. But not to worry! We will be playing many more concerts soon.

An American-style concert by the Residentie Orkest The Hague. The acclaimed Tianyi Lu conducts Dvorák's Ninth Symphony, his portrait of (the music of) the New World. You'll also hear Copland and Ives.

Dvořák'sSymphony No. 9
In his Ninth Symphony, "From the New World," Dvorák expresses his stay of several years in the United States. Where he became acquainted with spirituals and music of indigenous peoples. As director of the National Conservatory, he helped composers embrace all those traditions and arrive at an American style. Dvorák himself was also greatly influenced by all the music he learned. The Ninth Symphony, his most popular work, shows how he discovered a "new world. And at the same time missing his own old world, in the Czech Republic.

Copland and Ives
The Residentie Orkest pairs Dvorák with two of the most beloved American composers. From Aaron Copland sounds the Fanfare for the Common Man, a short and stirring ode to the "common man. Who at that time, 1942, was fighting for freedom on the other side of the ocean. Its imposing horns are followed by the more ethereal trumpet of Ives' The Unanswered Question. Amid woodwinds and strings, it asks a question about the meaning of existence over and over again. This magnificent American program is led by conductor Tianyi Lu. She recently captured both the prestigious Solti Prize and the Premio Cantelli.
