Chamber Music at the Nieuwe Kerk
Freedom
Unfortunately, this concert has already taken place. But not to worry! We will be playing many more concerts soon.
The urge to make music has no limits, even though history has silenced artists more than once. Tonight we honor those who made themselves heard, those who resisted, especially during World War II. A number of these Dutch composers were persecuted for this, some even murdered.
For example, Marius Flothuis wrote Sonata da camera while in camp captivity. One of the scores was lost there and later recovered. And Jan van Gilse joined the resistance and had to go into hiding. His sons were shot for this and he died of grief. After the liberation, it took a long time before the work of these brave musicians received its rightful recognition. Tonight you will hear a special selection. Dineke Mulock Houwer is the narrator and frames the music with the stories behind it.
