Each edition, the conductor briefly tells you more about the piece for a deeper musical experience. Tonight we show you how Shostakovich used his music to deal with Stalin's reign of fear.

Dimitri Shostakovich was one of Russia's greatest masters - one who regularly clashed with the dictator of the Soviet Union. After Stalin's death in 1953, Shostakovich wrote his Tenth Symphony expressing the years of fear, terror and violence. He transformed the relief he felt after the censorship of Stalin's regime of fear was lifted into chilling string work and an overwhelming scherzo. Conductor Daniel Raiskin helps introduce you to this absolute classic.
