Update concert 14-5-2022, 1:45 p.m.

Due to an injury, solo violinist Baiba Skride is unable to play for you. At this very short notice, we unfortunately cannot arrange a replacement for this. This means that tonight's program will not include Beethoven's Violin Concerto. Instead, we will give extra attention to Beethoven's Fourth Symphony during this Masterclassics evening.

----------

MasterClassics is a casual evening of excellence: approachable, stimulating and not too long. For the beginning listener and anyone who wants to get more out of classical music.

An ode to the romantic grandmaster Beethoven, born over 250 years ago in Bonn, Germany. Without this revolutionary composer, the musical landscape would have looked very different.

Conductor Andrew Grams, who replaces Richard Egarr, gives his vision of Beethoven's Fourth Symphony during this Masterclassics evening.

"In my teenage years, Beethoven's music was a familiar but at the same time a very foreign language. The kinetic energy was something every young person could identify with, but the softer, more philosophical sections were utterly mysterious. All these years later, I am still moved by Beethoven's rhythmic energy, but now it is precisely those gentle phrases that I find fantastic and give us a glimpse into what Beethoven wants to impart to us in terms of life lessons. His Violin Concerto and Fourth Symphony are two works that are generally joyful and exuberant and full of energetic vitality, but they are also about the great responsibility we must have with each other and for each other. Beethoven's music is wonderfully serious and whimsical at the same time."
